Staying Somewhere Truly Special in Coimbra: Our Experience at Solar Antigo Luxury Coimbra
Some stays are comfortable. Others are convenient. And then there are the rare ones that feel like part of the destination itself. Solar Antigo Luxury Coimbra absolutely falls into that last category.
From the moment we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t just another boutique hotel—it was a thoughtfully restored piece of Coimbra’s history, brought back to life with care, creativity, and a lot of charm.
a property with a Story
Solar Antigo is made up of several revitalized historic buildings, once part of a small village tucked just outside the usual tourist flow. Rather than modernizing everything into sameness, the property embraces its past. Original architectural details have been preserved throughout, and each suite is individually designed, reflecting both the building’s history and the character of the surrounding area. No two rooms are alike—and that’s exactly what makes it special.
Our Arrival : A Warm And Thoughtful Welcome
We were greeted with champagne and homemade treats waiting in our room, which instantly set the tone for the stay: personal, welcoming, and full of thoughtful details.
Our suite was cozy and eclectic, layered with textures, color, and personality. It felt curated rather than styled—comfortable, inviting, and full of soul.
And then there was the view.
That View
From our window, we looked out over the river below, with Coimbra’s colorful buildings climbing the hill in front of us. Morning light, evening glow, quiet moments watching the city move—it was one of those views you keep coming back to throughout the day just to admire again.
It felt romantic, peaceful, and unmistakably Coimbra.
The Location :Perfectly Placed
Solar Antigo is walkable to all of Coimbra’s major sights, yet removed from the busiest, most tourist-heavy streets. You get the best of both worlds: easy access and a more local, relaxed atmosphere.
One thing to know:
You’ll likely be parking and walking—often uphill. Coimbra is built on steep hills, and this area is no exception. But honestly? That’s part of the charm. The views, the quiet streets, and the sense of discovery are worth every step.
Exploring Coimbra
Coimbra itself completely won us over. It’s a historic university town, home to the University of Coimbra, founded in 1290—the oldest university in Portugal.
As you explore, you’ll notice groups of students wearing black capes, part of the traditional academic uniform. Fun fact: it’s often said that these capes were the inspiration behind the Harry Potter uniforms—and once you see them, it’s easy to believe.
a helpful Travel Hack
Although Coimbra is a lively student city, it has a unique rhythm. Many students leave town on weekends and during the summer months, which means the city feels noticeably calmer and less hectic during those times. It’s a great opportunity to experience Coimbra with fewer crowds while still enjoying its energy and culture.
Final Thoughts
We truly loved our stay at Solar Antigo Luxury Coimbra—and loved Coimbra itself just as much. The combination of historic preservation, unique design, thoughtful hospitality, and an unbeatable setting made this one of those stays we’ll remember long after the trip ends.
