Costa Rica: The Happiest Little Adventure on Earth (and One of Our Favorite Escapes!)

If you’re wondering why Costa Rica is one of the world’s famous Blue Zones, you’ll figure it out pretty fast — the pura vida energy hits you the moment you arrive. Even better? This tiny country is small enough to fit inside West Virginia, yet somehow manages to pack in 12 major ecological regions that feel like completely different worlds.

Rainforests, cloud forests, volcano valleys, coastlines — Costa Rica is basically Mother Nature showing off. And the people? Happiest humans ever.

Below is our honest, “learn from our adventures” guide to exploring this tropical dreamland.

Best Time to Visit

Costa Rica is lovely year-round, but December to April is the dry season — sunny skies, warm days, and lush landscapes.

The rainy season (May–November) brings emerald green everything and fewer crowds. If you don’t mind afternoon showers, it’s magical.

Travel Challenges ( And How To Handle Them )

Costa Rica is adventure-forward… and so are its roads.

  • Roads can be rough. Like, “Is this a road or a suggestion?” rough.

  • Wildlife everywhere. Monkeys crossing, coatis darting, iguanas sunbathing — your brakes will get a workout.

Tips to survive (and enjoy) the journey:

  • Rent a 4×4 — non-negotiable
  • Drive slowly, especially in rural or jungle areas
  • Avoid driving after dark
  • Download offline maps (signal gets shy in the mountains)

Our Favorite Places

Arenal
Watching an active volcano while soaking in natural hot springs? Yes please. Arenal feels like Jurassic Park but with cocktails.

Monteverde Cloud Forest
A mystical dream world. Mist drifting through trees, birds you’ll never see anywhere else, and suspension bridges that make you feel like you’re floating. Unreal.

Rainforest Adventures
Every shade of green you can imagine — and then some. Waterfalls, canopy walks, butterflies, and the kind of quiet that feels sacred.

Hummingbird Sanctuary
The tiniest, flashiest acrobats you’ve ever seen. You stand still for two seconds and suddenly you’re in a Disney movie.

Coastline Views
Turquoise water, soft sandy beaches, palm trees… perfection.

ATV Adventures
If you love going off off-road, ATVs are your ticket to hidden waterfalls, tiny mountain towns, and views worth every splash of mud.

Currency & ATMs

Costa Rica uses the colón, but U.S. dollars are widely accepted.

ATMs are easy to find in cities and tourist areas — just bring a backup card because machines can sometimes be “on break.”

Weather By Region

Costa Rica is tiny but dramatic.

  • Pacific Coast: Sunny, warm, beach-perfect

  • Caribbean Coast: More rain, jungle vibes,  wildlife

  • Mountains & Cloud Forests: Cool, misty

  • Rainforest regions: Hot & humid

Pack layers. And a sense of humor.

🐒 Wildlife Cautions

  • Scorpions love shoes. Shake them out. Always.

  • Monkeys are bold. Zip your bags.

  • Snakes in trees. Look up before you lean on anything.

  • Coatis and iguanas own the roads. Slow is smart.

  • Mosquitos: No explanation needed.

Costa Rica is safe — just be respectful of wildlife and stay aware.

Culture

Costa Ricans are warm, welcoming, and genuinely joyful. Expect smiles, slow living, and a whole lot of “pura vida.”

Safety

The country is friendly, but stay alert in big cities like San José — especially at night or around busy transit areas. Common sense goes a long way.

Food! Fresh, Delicious, Affordable

Everything tastes like it was picked that morning: fresh fish, tropical fruit, plantains, casados (rice, beans, meat, salad, plantains — the national comfort plate), coffee that will ruin you for all other coffee.

You eat well here. Really well.

If you want a destination packed with nature, joy, gorgeous chaos, and unforgettable moments, Costa Rica delivers over and over again. Pura vida, friends — you’re going to love it.

We stay endlessly curious—always exploring, learning, and falling in love with new places. We savor the detours, the surprises, and the beauty found elsewhere.
